10 Moments That Will Shape Wrestling During The Next Decade
1. Vince McMahon Is No Longer The Chairman
Vincent Kennedy McMahon has been in charge of WWE since 1982 and without him the wrestling industry would not be where it is today. That being said, McMahon turned 74 this past year and the wrestling product is extremely different today than it was when he started. Whether he voluntarily steps down or is asked to, this is the decade Vince McMahon will no longer be the Chairman of WWE.
McMahon could step aside to pursue other interests - he is in the midst of a second attempt at the XFL. That same football league has already led to McMahon being sued by one WWE shareholder. This could put pressure on him to move away from WWE, should the XFL become his priority.
McMahon has notoriously been unwilling to relinquish the reigns of WWE creative. His autocracy over storylines has caused friction with both wrestlers and Triple H, the heir to McMahon's throne. Triple H is more in touch with what wrestling fans want and, this decade, there is going to be a push for The Game to take over WWE.
Then there are the declining ratings for SmackDown and RAW. Opinions about what makes good sports entertainment may differ, but numbers don't lie. While FOX and the USA Network have been patient with the decline in viewership, eventually this is going to become a problem.
This will be the decade when McMahon steps down and before we ring in 2030, the Paul Levesque era of WWE will begin.
