According to his mentee Sami Zayn, the story goes that after over a decade lighting up North American wrestling rings, El Generico hung up the mask and returned to his native Tijuana to help run an orphanage. Despite trading it all in for a life of quiet altruism, Generico found himself involved in one last scrap, tragically turning up dead in a ditch at the hands of the Mexican cartel.

Shortly after commencing his NXT career, Zayn began paying a touching if not immediately obvious tribute to his trainer; the logo accompanying his Titantron video almost perfectly matched the design on the mask of the fallen Generico. Rumours that the two men are one and the same are, frankly, ludicrous.
