10 Most Awesome Wrestling Submissions (And Who Did Them Best)
7. The Anaconda Vice (Hiroyoshi Tenzan)
While many will know CM Punk for his sporadic use of this arm trap hold, its true legacy lies with New Japan legend Hiroyoshi Tenzan. The man with the most mangled ankle in wrestling took the compression choke from Judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu early in his career. He used it to pave his way to multiple IWGP Heavyweight Championships and G1 Climax wins.
While his highly questionable mullet and crooked, often near-fatal moonsault may not imply it, Tenzan was a convincing killer in his prime. His Anaconda Vice looked brutal, as did the slam takedown he'd do with it to get his agonised opponents to the mat.
Watching him wrench on the contorted shoulder of his opponent as he squashed their throat was grim. Better still, the hold was protected enough that tapping out did not hinder his foes' credibility. Holding on at all in the midst of a powerhouse main eventer's torture methods seemed impressive.
While Tenzan is a shadow of a shadow of his former self these days, the few times he does get the hold locked in still secures a pop (or polite applause in these COVID-weary times). It would serve Punk well to go back and study some old tapes of Tenzan before his inevitable match with MJF next year. No doubt many fans would love to see the Long Island menace be forced to tap out.
