10 Most Believable Underdogs In Wrestling Today

7. Drake Maverick

A controversial entry, Drake Maverick's current situation in WWE is tenuous at best. Before receiving his release from the company in April, Maverick was a small, charismatic foil that served as the antagonist seeking to free the 24/7 Championship from R-Truth's stranglehold. Tying his championship victory to his real-life marriage and subsequent (hopefully not real-life) consummation, there was something about his relentless scheming, setbacks, and dogged determination to see it through that made Maverick endearing. Of course, as with all nice things, WWE eventually just stopped trying, and took him off TV entirely.

Maverick's gut-wrenching video in the wake of WWE's mass layoffs made him instantly relatable and sympathetic. It is difficult to tell where the storyline ends and the reality of the situation begins when it comes to Maverick. Is WWE taking making a storyline out of his release? Are they forcing him to work during his no-compete period, during which he is hoping to engender support once he is inevitably let go? On the other hand, is this a situation where the former Rockstar's job is literally on the line, offering him up a new contract if he becomes popular enough?

The point is that people love Drake as much as they loathe WWE's shady business practices. It is because his passion and his caring shine through that the crowd has now grown passionate and care about him winning, futile though it may be.
