The final two matches at the 1998 King Of The Ring must be considered unique, because nobody could have foretold what would happen. People were still reeling following the performances put on by The Undertaker and (specifically) Mankind, meaning Steve Austin and Kane had quite the task on their hands in the show's main event.

Contesting a 'First Blood' encounter felt bizarre enough due to Kane's outfit, but now they had to produce a brawl worthy of following such a spectacle. It's arguable whether or not Austin and Kane succeeded, but it's the match result that stands out as the most memorable part of the headliner.

Kane left as WWF Heavyweight Champion, just months after Austin had defeated Shawn Michaels to become champ for the first time at WrestleMania XIV. Few could have suspected that Kane, who had only been in the WWF since the previous October, would be the one to end Austin's first reign with the belt.

The next night on Raw, Austin regained the title, but not before the King Of The Ring ended with the feeling that things in the company had been turned inside out.
