10 Most Brutal WCW Matches Ever

1. Roddy Piper VS Greg Valentine (Starrcade 1983)

A Dog Collar Match is something you don't see too often these days. Both competitors have dog collars strapped around their necks, tying them together at both ends of a long, heavy chain. That means they aren't too far away from each other, no matter what happens. There's no running away. Of any match on this list, this has the slowest start. Piper and Valentine try to feel each other out, almost waiting to see what the other one does before they go on offense. It's weird to see Roddy Piper as a babyface getting hot crowd reactions, considering how hated he would be in wrestling only a short amount of time later, but the crowd is very excited to see him get revenge on Valentine for injuring his ear. Valentine goes after the ear right away, trying to take Piper's equilibrium away. Valentine wraps the chain around his hand and just starts unloading shots to Piper's ear, causing Piper to sell that he's losing his balance as he staggers around the ring while announcers Bob Caudle and Gordon Solie talk about the possibility of Piper losing his hearing forever. Ironically, Piper would have his eardrum injured during the match, causing him to lose 50% of his hearing in that ear for the rest of his life. Both men were covered in blood by the end. They weren't the first match on the card to feature blood, but they added to the stains on the canvas. After the match, as Valentine hung Piper over the top rope and was choking him, you could see the blood streaming from Piper's ear in a stunning visual. Just plenty of hatred and intensity here, in a match you just won't see duplicated in this day and age.
