3. "WHAT?"
This writer sometimes wonders: If Stone Cold knew the calamitous effect "WHAT?" would wind up having on the next 20 years of promos, would he have ever uttered that fateful four letter word on camera?
The second and final chant on this list, "WHAT?" is still rearing its ugly head to suck the life out of whichever poor wrestler is holding a mic at the time. Decades after Stone Cold made it wrestling's most famous interrogative, crowds are still chanting "WHAT?" whenever a wrestler:
- tries to tell a story on the mic.
- has the temerity to take their time during a promo.
- is unlucky enough to be performing in front of some bozos who wants to hijack the show for s**ts and giggles.
Unlike "THIS IS AWESOME!" - which is a valid, celebratory chant that absolutely should be used when the occasion calls for it - "WHAT?" feels like a mean-spirited running gag at least twenty years past its sell-by date. Like the "CM PUNK" chants that littered stadiums a few years ago, it was fun at first but now it's just wearisome. The only difference is that the "CM PUNK" chants stopped when he returned to wrestling in 2021, and "WHAT?" is still bloody going.
