10 Most Disastrous Wrestling Heel Turns
2. Sting
Even Sting wasn't safe from the WCW writing staff's pathological need to have literally every single wrestler under their control change allegiances at least once (and, under optimal conditions, about six or seven times).
This turn came at Fall Brawl in September 1999. The Icon was booked in the night's main event against fellow good guy Hulk Hogan, with whom - over recent weeks - he had been helping to stave off the company's latest existential crisis.
But paranoia got the better of Sting at the match's climactic moment. After a medley of interference (well, it wouldn't be WCW without that) he wrapped a handy baseball bat around the skull of his opponent, winning the sixth world title of his illustrious career in the process.
Bookers presumably expected the Stinger to be booed over the weeks ahead, but they had made a severe miscalculation. Fans continued to cheer him throughout, making clear that they would rather have seen Hogan assume the role of evil-doer. Sure enough, he transitioned back into a face just two months later.
