10 Most Disastrous Wrestling Heel Turns

1. Steve Austin

Heel turns don't get much more disastrous than helping to bring the curtain down on the most successful three-year period in the entire history of the wrestling industry.

To be fair, the extent to which Stone Cold striking a dirty deal with Vince McMahon at WrestleMania X-Seven can be blamed for the end of the Attitude Era is still a matter of debate for wrestling historians. The fact that it coincided nicely with the collapse of WCW complicates things.

But we can all agree it didn't help. The Texas Rattlesnake had grown into WWE's most popular figure after taking on his anti-establishment persona during the late-1990s. Having him join forces with the status quo ran counter to everything that had made their product so successful in the latter half of the Monday Night Wars.

Despite being paired with Triple H, and turning his back on the entire company for a cushy spot in The Alliance in the months ahead, Austin was seldom jeered with any enthusiasm. There are some things in wrestling that just aren't going to fly - and this beer-chugging, hell-raising son of a gun being a bad guy is one of them.
