9. Ryan Shamrock
The Ryan Shamrock angle of 1999 initially seemed to be a typical Russo-era soap opera. Alicia Webb entered the company as Ryan, the (kayfabe) younger sister of Ken Shamrock - whom she then began to date behind the scenes. While there's nothing outwardly wrong about this - no more than a pair of sitcom actors hooking up while playing siblings - things took a decidedly strange turn. In the storyline, Ryan began to attract the attentions of superstars such as Val Venis and Billy Gunn, and even starred in one of Val's infamous softcore porn vignettes entitled 'Shaving Ryan's Privates'. I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if the writers actually came up with that title first, and worked out the rest of the entire angle from there, but I digress... Ken became very protective of Ryan and began to beat down anyone who would look her way, but some viewers detected rather uncomfortable undertones. Some felt that Ken was becoming a little overprotective. Jealous, even. In a 2010 interview with
In Your Head Radio (recapped on
ProWrestling.net), Ryan revealed that WWE
did actually propose an incest angle. In terms of implicit creepiness, this storyline clearly deserves its place on the list - but just think how higher it could have placed had Vince had his way. Thankfully, he didn't.
