11 Most Disturbing Family Member Angles In WWE History
8. Eugene And 'Uncle Eric'
From top to bottom, the Eugene character was horribly offensive, particularly to the thousands of wrestling fans affected by mental disorders or learning difficulties. The basic idea of Eugene as a wrestling savant, a socially-awkward superfan who happens to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of moves and skills, was a novel one - but the decision to give him such a heavy-handed, stereotypical gimmick ruined any potential he had. One of the worst parts of the entire angle was Eugene's relationship with his 'Uncle', Eric Bischoff. The Bisch has always been a natural heel, but the sight of his on-screen persona allowing (and even encouraging) the brutal, bloody beatdowns of a disabled family member certainly crossed a line. Things culminated in a horrific match at Summerslam 2004, which saw Triple H leave Eugene a broken mess. It could be argued that Eugene's mistreatment at the hands of Bischoff and Evolution was solely intended to garner heel heat, but the distasteful, insensitive nature of the entire angle cast a huge shadow over any of its goals. Then there's the rumour that the character was based on an actual WWE fan, but those are unsubstantiated. You'd hope they weren't true, but you never know with this company.
