11 Most Disturbing Family Member Angles In WWE History
7. CM Punk Sings To Rey Mysterio's Daughter
The old live television adage of 'never work with animals or children' could most certainly be applied to professional wrestling, and I'm not talking about the 'Kennel From Hell' match. I'm of the opinion that kids should be largely kept out of the WWE product, excluding moments of grand celebration. Sure, bring out the children for a retirement ceremony or emotional first World Championship win. More often than not, however, their inclusion in intense rivalries tends to create an uncomfortable atmosphere. Nobody likes to see kids threatened, even if it's just for heel heat. During the build to WrestleMania XXVI, Rey Mysterio began feuding with CM Punk's Straight Edge Society. In a particularly disturbing SmackDown segment, Punk crashed the birthday celebrations of Rey's infant daughter, and proceeded to slowly sing 'Happy Birthday' while staring her in the face. If that sounds inappropriate in text form, trust me, it wasn't. It was wince-inducing stuff. Make no mistake about it, SES-era Punk was a deliberately sinister character, but the inclusion of Rey's family seemed far too intense for an upper-midcard feud. The rivalry already had enough at stake, anyway (Rey would have to join Punk's stable if he lost, while Punk would shave himself bald should he fail to win) so this family affair wasn't needed. Fittingly, Rey won at 'Mania, but that raises another problem with the inclusion of children. Angles in which a heel menaces a babyface's family tend to only end one way - with a decisive face victory. Rather than telegraph an ending by involving a wrestler's loved ones, it would be nice to see the booking team come up with a greater number of fresh, imaginative storylines.
