1. Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart (Survivor Series 1997)
No list looking at the most dramatic main events in WWF/WWE history would be complete without the 'Montreal Screwjob'. So much has been written about the occasion, but it still stands tall as one of the most important nights in wrestling ever. On that night, Bret Hart's life was changed forever, and it would have a knock on effect for Vince McMahon too. Hart was about to leave for WCW, but didn't want to drop the WWF Heavyweight Title to Shawn Michaels in Canada. That represented a problem, because the 1997 Survivor Series was taking place on Montreal. Therefore, McMahon, Michaels, referee Earl Hebner and others decided they were going to simply take the belt from Bret, whether he liked it or not. In Vince's mind, consequences be damned, because he was frightened Hart would show up on WCW television with his prized title. During the match, McMahon called for the bell early when HBK had Bret in his own Sharpshooter submission move. Spitting on his boss at ringside, Hart later punched him out in the locker rooms backstage. There was an eerie atmosphere in the arena as the show went off the air, drama personified.
