The NXT championship was first introduced on the August 2, 2012 edition of NXT when Commissioner Dusty Rhodes announced a "Gold Rush" tournament featuring four developmental roster NXT Superstars and four main roster WWE Superstars. Seth Rollins and Jinder Mahal made it to the final of the competition which also included Richie Steamboat, Leo 'Adam Rose' Kruger, Bo Dallas, Drew McIntyre, Michael 'Curtis Axel' McGillicutty and Justin Gabriel. The then future Shield member picked up the win and was crowned the first NXT Champion. Rollins' reign was the shortest of all time at 133 days while the former Champion Adrian Neville currently holds the record at 287 days. Big E Langston, Bo Dallas and current champ Sami Zayn are the other men to have held the belt.
