The Anonymous Raw General Manager angle remains one of WWE’s most contrived stories of the past decade. Kicking off in June 2010, Vince McMahon made the decision to fire Bret Hart, set up a laptop at ringside, and had an anonymous figure call Raw’s shots via emails read by Michael Cole.

It was a complete disaster. There was a certain degree of intrigue around the Anonymous GM’s identity to start (Shane McMahon’s name was regularly brought up), but the angle slowly petered-out. WWE reportedly started the story with no plans concrete regarding the GM’s identity, panicked for a solution throughout the story’s lifespan, and paid it off in the most unsatisfying manner imaginable: Hornswoggle.

A universally despised angle, but the Anonymous GM was able to enact a certain degree of authority over Raw at angle’s inception. This saves him from a higher position, but the fact that Hornswoggle wasn’t revealed as the man behind it until so long after the laptop had disappeared more than justifies his inclusion.
