5. Vince McMahon Secretly Owned ECW

We’ve tread through some pretty nutty topics thus far, but here’s a WWE conspiracy theory that’s at least moderately plausible. It’s no secret that Vince McMahon offered financial support to ECW in the 1990s. Vince and Paul Heyman have both talked about it on several occasions, and it paid dividends. WWE were allowed to use ECW talent on their TV shows, and it gave Vince extra leverage to acquire ECW’s assets when they eventually went bankrupt.

Theorists have suggested that there was a lot more to the Heyman/McMahon relationship than this, however, and that Vince’s cash injections were more than just aid. Rumours suggest that Vince’s financing of ECW gave him decision-making power within the promotion, and that while Heyman was ECW’s public face, Vince was secretly calling the shots and booking storylines behind the scenes.

There’s no concrete proof to the theory, but it’s almost worth considering. So many ECW wrestlers ended up crossing over to WWE (and vice versa) that certain sects of fans were worked into believe ECW was no more than an ECW offshoot, but while there’s some logic behind this idea, it’s likely nonsense.
