5. Leon Ruff Beats Johnny Gargano - NXT 2020
Few modern wrestlers embody the underdog upset aspect of wrestling better than former NXT North American Champion Leon Ruff.
Ruff made a few appearances on Raw and SmackDown in losing efforts against Aleister Black and Sheamus before rocking up in NXT. There, he would continue to job to the likes of Tommaso Ciampa and Karrion Kross before getting selected "at random" to fight Johnny Gargano for the North American title.
After Johnny Wrestling got caught showboating in front of rival Damien Priest, Ruff hit the champ with a Crucifix pin to pick up the victory and the championship. Both men sold it fantastically - Ruff looked like he'd just won the lottery, whilst Gargano clung to the belt for all it was worth.
Ruff's reign with the belt lasted just 25 days, one of the shortest in the title's history, but his win gave him some serious credentials and helped him secure various indie bookings after his WWE departure in 2022.
So, why did WWE decide to give Ruff such a big win? Oh... as a joke... to prove that Gargano was cursed as a champion... great...
