The most recent occurrence of a mystery opponent came in July of 2016, when Sasha Banks needed a tag team partner to take on the team of WWE Women's Champion Charlotte and Dana Brooke at Battleground.

The second brand expansion in WWE history had just taken place a mere days before this event, with several new female personalities being called up from NXT to the main roster. While all three women involved in the Battleground tag match were drafted to RAW, there were still several inter-promotional matches taking place on the card and it wouldn't have been out of place to see any of these new female call-ups selected as Sasha's partner.

There was Nia Jax, Alexa Bliss, Carmella and Eva Marie, alongside the possibilities of a returning Nikki Bella or a veteran superstar that WWE just wanted to insert into the mix in the short-term.

To say that Bayley was a true shock would not be 100% accurate, but given her absence from the WWE Draft on July 19th, many fans thought past the former NXT Women's Champion for Battleground's reveal. When it turned out that the mystery opponent was Bayley, the Verizon Center came unglued in what was arguably the loudest pop eve a female WWE superstar has ever received.

This one will be remembered for years and years to come.
