10 Most Memorable WWE Raw Moments From 1998

4. The First "Match" Between Steve Austin & Vince McMahon

Date: April 13th Sometimes, in wrestling, when someone continues to go out of their way to make your life miserable, you just have to challenge them to a match and get it over with. That's precisely what Steve Austin did here, requesting a match with Vince McMahon a mere two weeks after he won the WWF Title at WrestleMania 14. This was it. This was finally the moment where Austin would be able to get his hands on McMahon legally. Fans were ecstatic at the thought of it. Raw built to the match for the entire episode, from Vince receiving training from Gerald Brisco and Pat Patterson to Shane McMahon trying to talk him out of it. It was time for the main event, and Vince has Austin wrestle with one arm tied behind his back, per a statement that "Stone Cold" made earlier in the evening. Tension, anticipation, build... the segment goes on and on, but the crowd remains hot for every second of it. Just as they were about to finally lock up, Mick Foley came out in his Dude Love persona, talking about how there needs to be more love in the arena. It's all a setup, though, as he locks the Mandible Claw in on Austin, who, again, has one arm tied behind his back. Dude beat Austin up for several minutes, while Vince would leave the ring. It was a bait-and-switch of the highest order, but instead of fans being angry they were "lied" to, it merely made them anticipate the physicality between Austin and Vince even more, and now, it made them anticipate Austin getting his hands on Dude Love, as well.
