To this day, The Boogeyman can be expected to make surprise appearances every now and then. Lately, the character has been used to fill a space in the annual Royal Rumble match, but he does have an unpredictable need to show up occasionally. The character first appeared in July, 2005, and was last seen on the WWE Network show, 'WWE Swerved'. Played by Tough Enough season 4 contestant, Marty Jones, the gimmick has been mildly popular over the years. It's likely that the persona terrifies young children, but there's a real mystery behind the whole thing. Looking for all the world like a witch doctor of some sort, The Boogeyman isn't the same character that is regularly used as a mythical threat to stop kids from misbehaving. Instead, the gimmick has been used as a heel who targets the good guys as well as heels. When WWE have tried to portray the character as more of a babyface, it usually falls flat. The very nature of the worm-eating Boogeyman gimmick doesn't lend itself well to being well-liked by fans. Perhaps what makes the whole character so mysterious is that he can still turn up at any time.
