5. Threatened To Quit WWF After 'Montreal Screwjob'

Story: Calling for the bell suddenly from ringside, Vince McMahon legitimately put a stop to the WWF Title showdown between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels at the 1997 Survivor Series. From there, Hart would punch McMahon in the face backstage, and the event became known as the 'Montreal Screwjob', in reference to where the event took place and the idea that Vince and others had conspired to remove the WWF Title from Hart's waist before he departed the company for WCW. In the backstage area, once wrestlers caught wind of what had happened, there was anarchy. A lot of employees threatened to walk out on the company, and Mick Foley apparently did, saying he refused to work for somebody who could do something like that to one of his most trusted performers. Why People Believe It: Both Mick Foley and Bret Hart have written about the incident in their respective autobiographies, with Hart claiming that whilst Foley had good intentions over walking out, he was simply acting in the heat of the moment. In Foley's words, he was outraged, but realised he had a family to feed. Should We Believe It: Yes, Foley did threaten to walk out on the WWF. That much is true, but he didn't actually leave the promotion, and was back at work shortly after the whole 'Montreal Screwjob' incident.
