Story: There are a lot of WWE only wrestling fans that think if it happened in WWE then it can't happen anywhere else. They think that the company invented everything wrestling related because it's the biggest. It's not a rational way of thinking, but that's just how some fans are. Bret Hart won most of his matches with his patented submission move, the Sharpshooter. It's probably the most well known submission move in WWE history. Sting also won a lot of his matches with a similar submission move called the Scorpion Deathlock. Who did it first? Why People Believe It: It's wrestling, so moves are stolen all the time and the fans know that. Bret is arguably more famous than Sting just because of his WWE legacy. Should We Believe It: No. Sting was doing it first because he was a singles star before Bret. Bret's told the story that when he was pushed as a singles wrestler in 1991 he needed a finishing move. Apparently it was Konnan that taught him the move. At the time, Konnan was working in WWE as Max Moon. They knew Sting was doing it in WCW, but nobody in WWE was doing it so it was fair game for Bret. When Bret went to WCW in late 1997 he eventually had a feud with Sting and the company really put over the idea that these two guys with the same move were going to see who the master of the hold was. It was pretty exciting at the time. Their matches were pretty good, but never that great.
