7. Hulk Hogan Refused To Put Him Over Clean At Starrcade 1997
Story: It should have been the easiest match to book in WCW history. Sting didn't wrestle for all of 1997 because there was something in his contract that allowed him to take the year off from actually wrestling. He was on WWE TV regularly as the guy that was opposed the New World Order. He was as popular as ever rocking his "crow" gimmick and the fans were into everything he was doing. Hulk Hogan was the WCW World Champion. He dominated the WCW Title scene and as the top heel, he should have put over Sting at Starrcade, which is WCW's biggest show - their version of WrestleMania. Instead of a clean Sting win, though, referee Nick Patrick did a fast count that wasn't even that fast and they did a screwy finish with Bret Hart showing up to make sure there was no screwjob. When the match restarted, Sting won as he should have the first time although it was a mistake to not do it right the first time. They ended up making Sting vacate the title a few weeks later and then did more matches. The best time to do the change was Starrcade. Nothing else would have been as good. Why People Believe It: Hogan refused doing jobs to people throughout his career. He had creative control, so he could do what he wanted and had more power than any wrestler in WCW history. Should We Believe It: The belief here is that Hogan likely had a say in not doing a true clean job. He should have done it. He could have done it, but he probably said no. It's ridiculous. This is one of those moments where people point to as a downfall of WCW because it was time to move on with Sting as the guy after Hogan puts him over clean, yet they couldn't even get that right.
