Dubbed “The Ultimate Challenge,” Hulk Hogan vs. The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VI is one of the most important matches in WWE history. It was the WWF’s two biggest babyfaces going at it with Hogan’s WWF Championship and Warrior’s Intercontinental Title both on the line, and it drew an immense amount of interest as a result. As iconic as it still is, however, the match itself is nothing to write home about, and its flaws are particularly apparent on revisit.

The crowd’s energy is high, but there’s not much to sink your teeth into over the contest’s 23 minutes. Both men knew how to command an audience, but much of the bout consists of cheesy “Hulking up” moments, no-selling, and both men lying motionless on the canvas. Even at the end, Hogan doesn’t do a convincing job of putting Warrior over as his successor, ensuring that much of the spotlight remained on him as he celebrated with the near double champion.

Nobody expected a technical masterclass from two such limited wrestlers, but The Ultimate Challenge’s quality has been wildly exaggerated over the years. It’s a great piece of crowd control, but a laborious wrestling match.
