10 Most Patriotic American WWE Wrestlers Ever

3. Sgt. Slaughter

WWE.com

When you think about patriotic WWF/E characters, it€™s impossible not to think of Sgt. Slaughter, a square-jawed performer decked out in camouflage who looked like he could have legitimately been a military drill instructor at one time, barking orders at the €œmaggots€ in the crowd.

And yeah, while Slaughter actually was a heel during his initial run in WWE, it wasn€™t long before he faced off against the proper opponent to elicit cheers: the Iron Sheik. The Sheik was probably the most-hated heel in the WWF in 1984, having beaten Bob Backlund for the world championship (and then quickly dropping it to Hulk Hogan).

After the run against Hogan, Sheik was confronted by Sarge, who battled him throughout the year, including a legendary boot camp match at Madison Square Garden.

Slaughter was immortalized as a G.I. Joe character and got more mileage out of simply wearing camo and saluting than almost any other WWF/E wrestler. He was (and on Old School Raw episodes, still is) the personification of an American hero.

Let€™s just forget that godawful run as an Iraqi sympathizer, and chalk it up to Vince McMahon huffing paint fumes.

Scott is a former journalist and longtime wrestling fan who was smart enough to abandon WCW during the Monday Night Wars the same time as the Radicalz. He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
