Stan Stasiak bridged the gap between Pedro Morales and Bruno Sammartino's second reign as WWWF Heavyweight Champion, which may be purpose enough for some, but analysing his stint makes it clear he was the first true transitional champion.

Morales had held the belt for just over 1,000 days before dropping it to Stan, and Sammartino would top that with a 1,237 day run as champ once he defeated Stasiak just nine days later. That's right, Stan Stasiak only held the title for just over one week in 1973, which was hardly enough time to establish himself as anything other than a flash in the pan.

At least Ivan Koloff's win over Sammartino several years earlier had come as a complete surprise and paved the way for something new (that being the ascent of Pedro Morales). By contrast, Stasiak's only run with the gold ended by him losing to someone who had already been champion, making it ultimately pointless.

Upon dropping the title to Bruno, a heel like Stan Stasiak was dead in the water as a top guy, and he'd never really came close to the belt again.
