10 Most Polarizing Wrestlers Working Today
3. MJF
And now, a look at someone whose villainy is confined to the wrestling ring.
MJF's return to his bad old ways was initially a cause of celebration for the AEW faithful. After playing an "AEW rah-rah!" babyface (an archetype AEW fans were already sick of), Maxwell Jacob Friedman reverting to his villainous self was a much needed reboot of his character. After all, AEW's best years were greatly enhanced by Friedman's diabolically evil scumbag of a heel. Surely a return to those salad days would be welcomed by all?
Given that MJF is in this article, you can probably guess the result.
MJF's recent feud with Jeff Jarrett hasn't exactly been the stellar return to form fans were hoping for. Of particular offense was the January 15th episode of AEW Dynamite, which saw the pair engage in a fifteen minute promo war that saw MJF bring up Kurt Angle's balls and inadvertently imply that AEW was on its last legs. The promo, and it's excruciating length, was less-than-unanimously praised by wrestling fans, and showed that MJF's once unsassailable grip on the wrestling fandom was weakening.
MJF will always be remembered as one of the best bad guys of his generation, but - much like with AEW in general - the critics are already lapping up the blood in the water.
