10 Most Prestigious Wrestling Tournaments Of All Time
8. AJW Five Star Top Women 1994
During the late 1980s and early-to-mid 1990s, the best wrestlers on the entire planet were the Joshi (womens) wrestlers of All Japan Womens Pro Wrestling. These women put on a one-night tournament in 1994 to crown the person they believed to be the best womens wrestler in the world. The names of participants included, among others, Manami Toyota, Aja Kong, Akira Hokuto, Kyoko Inoue and Dynamite Kansai. These women are known today as some of the most innovative wrestlers in history, and, because they were physically smaller than their male counterparts, they were able to pull off some of the most jaw-dropping wrestling moves ever seen. The tournament itself also featured some variety, as it also included some amateur wrestling, kickboxing matches, and even some midget wrestling. But most importantly, it features some of the most complex and emotional storytelling youll ever see in a tournament. Thats what made it so prestigious: it balanced different kinds of matches while maintain an atmosphere that emphasized the spirit of competition and personal success. This might be the most appropriately-named tournament in all of wrestling. All of these women, and the matches they participated in, were more than capable of putting on a 5-star match.
