10 Most Protected WWE Finishing Moves Ever
8. Eclipse - Ember Moon
The Eclipse is marvellous and so, too, is Ember Moon/Athena, who has never botched the execution, despite the effort it takes to ensure correct precision.
WWE had no choice but to protect the move. It's a variant of the Stunner, the very move that led 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin to success at the height of WWE's own success; it was because of Austin, partly anyway, that the Attitude Era was so hot and that goes down to the Stunner. It's a crowd-popper but in Austin's hands, it was more than a move to pop the boys at the climax of a gruelling series of international live events or, indeed, at the end of any WCPW taping. It was a believable match-ender and championship-winner.
It had the same effect for Ember Moon in WWE and NXT, and continues to do so for the now-Athena in ROH. A gorgeous, elegant spinning dive from atop the turnbuckles sees Moon fly towards her opponent, expertly drilling them with the Stunner. The most iconic of executions are those which see the opponent sell it spectacularly: Mickie James, Alicia Fox, Liv Morgan, et al.
In WWE, it was only ever kicked out of once, by Asuka at the third NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn, ensuring its protection and the protection of its finest practitioner, too, was intact.
