The Legion of Doom left The WWF in 1999, because they were upset with the offensive Hawk drug abuse storyline. While that was not the way they would have wanted to go out, they probably wouldn’t have lasted much longer anyway. The team was older, and couldn’t keep up with the younger generation anymore. When a team built off of power and speed loses those traits, the writing is on the wall.

In 2003, they were given a couple of tryout matches, with one of them televised on Raw in a quick loss to Kane and Rob Van Dam. Hawk and Animal tried, but the magic was gone. Sadly, Hawk died five months later, ending their legendary run.

In 2005, WWE released a great DVD retrospective on their careers, and the nostalgia for them was strong...despite only half the team still alive. Animal was brought back at the age of 45 to battle MNM, and he chose Heidenreich of all people to team with him. It was just weird. After Heidenreich’s release, he somehow remained on the roster for awhile, and even became a singles act known as The Road Warrior before being released.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
