After doing her time on the indies and in developmental league Ohio Valley Wrestling, the well-travelled Mickie James debuted on WWE TV with a bang on the October 10th, 2005 episode of Raw. James' character was Trish Stratus' number one fan. Things started innocently enough with the two divas tagging and developing a friendship but it quickly degenerated into Single White Female territory. James grew more obsessed with Stratus as the weeks went by, going so far as to dress up as her idol for a Halloween costume contest and eliminate herself from a battle royal so that Trish could retain her Women's Championship. The angle took a sexual turn on a Christmas episode of Raw where James and Stratus shared a kiss under the mistletoe. At the 2006 Royal Rumble Mickie declared her love for Stratus and from there it was full-on psycho lesbian mode for the character. After turning on Trish during the March 18th, 2006 episode of Saturday Night's Main Event things got considerably weirder. James was shown to have a shrine to Stratus and would talk to pictures of her. Things got considerable more risqué during their big Championship match at WrestleMania 22 with Mickie grabbing Stratus' crotch, making an obscene gesture towards the hard cam and pinning her in a sexually provocative way. Mickie toned down the character following the feud with Status and turned babyface.
