In late 1988, The Road Warriors beat The Midnight Express and had finally taken their rightful place as NWA World Tag Team Champions. The Legion of Doom had fans thinking they were about to get very comfortable on the NWA tag team mountain top. Animal & Hawk turned back challenge after challenge including teams from the newly formed Varsity Club faction.

That is why fans were shocked when they dropped the belts to the Varsity Club team of ‘Dr. Death’ Steve Williams and Mike Rotunda at Clash Of The Champions VI. The match was not without controversy. Referee Teddy Long made a fast three count which started his heel run and transition to pro wrestling manager. The loss was also the beginning of the end for The Road Warriors in the NWA. The team signed with rival WWE in June 1990.
