In May of this year, former WWE Superstar Ashley Massaro was found dead in her home in Long Island. The cause of death was recorded as suicide.
Once the outpouring of tributes from her former employers stopped, it threw her lawsuit against them into sharp focus. Specifically, the revelations that had emerged during her testimony. Most horrifying amongst them, that WWE had discouraged her from reporting that she was raped by US military personnel during a tour of Kuwait.
In published excerpts from her sworn affidavit, Massaro alleges that she was drugged and raped by a man claiming to be a US army doctor. This is, of course, horrifying enough on its own, but Massaro went on to state that Vince McMahon “stressed that if [she] disclosed this incident, it would ruin the relationship between the WWE and the US Military. He told [Massaro] not to let one bad experience ruin the good work they were doing."
Massaro stated that, following the incident, she felt “defeated”, traumatised and utterly without support. She claims that at no point did the company offer her any form of counseling or therapy for the incident, but merely asked for her silence for the sake of avoiding any bad PR.
