Professional wrestling, and especially the WWE, has had a long-standing problem with racism in both its corporate structure and on-screen output. As the owner and operator of the company, the buck stops with Vince McMahon, and whether directly or not, he is responsible and accountable for the WWE’s long-standing race problem.

In the ring alone, the list of questionable things that McMahon has signed off on is near endless, and includes the D-Generation X blackface parody, Tony Atlas’ “Saba Simba” character and McMahon himself using the n-word on a WWE broadcast. However, it’s institutionally where WWE has the most trouble, and where their hypocrisy is laid bare.

WWE and Vince McMahon were quick to distance themselves from Hulk Hogan after his recent scandal, but they continue to employ known racists within the company. Alberto Del Rio was fired for standing up for himself against a racist employee, Triple H has been accused of racism by both Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez and Michael Hayes has countless accusations of racism and harassment to his name.

While not all of these stories feature McMahon, it’s damning that he continues to employ people likes Hayes in executive positions, while cutting ties with the likes of Hulk Hogan. Hogan wasn’t fired because he was a racist, he was fired because he was a racist and there was a news story about it, which at the end of the day is the only thing WWE cares about.
