10 Most Shocking Wrestling Heel Turns
8. The Rockers Clear The Air
Many have claimed that they saw Shawn Michaels' early-90s heel turn in their crystal balls - and, to be fair, they're probably telling the truth, since The Rockers had been at each other's throats for weeks (hence the "clear the air" barbershop talks).
But for the generation (a lot of them young kids) who watched live as HBK Superkicked Marty Jannetty out of nowhere, and then - in one of the all-time great heel moments - slammed his head through a pane of glass, this was one of the most viscerally impactful scenes in wrestling history.
Even for the pre-internet smarks, there must too have been some trepidation in predicting that Michaels would receive the backing for a solo push, when so many of those standing between him and the main event were beefed-up muscle monsters by comparison to whom he looked like a twig.
In that sense, it can be compared to Kevin Owens turning on Chris Jericho earlier this year: yes, you knew it was going to happen at some point, but after so many false dawns, it was still shocking to see KO beating up the man he used to call best friend.
