The Honky Tonk Man does not have the typical legacy of an Intercontinental Champion, as he was not a revered in-ring technician nor did he go on to be a main event star in WWE. However, his record-breaking 64-week run with the title remains iconic today as it is the perfect example of a midcard belt being used effectively.

Stars such as Randy Savage, Ricky Steamboat, Jake Roberts, and Brutus Beefcake were all unsuccessful in trying to pry the title away from the cowardly heel, who frequently abused his right as champion by defending the title under a countout or disqualification loss. This method of booking was very much a product of the time, when touring and live events were more important than television, so repeated use of cheating wasn't as aggravating.

Wrestling fans were dying for someone to take the coveted belt from the Elvis wannabe and the stage was set when he issued an open challenge for the title at SummerSlam 1988. The Ultimate Warrior answered and the rest is history, as the face-painted superstar squashed Honky Tonk Man in just over half-a-minute to end his 454-day reign as champion.
