10 Most Shocking WWE Superstar Releases Of 2014

2. Alberto Del Rio

In one of the WWE€™s most significant talent cuts of 2014, Alberto Del Rio was abruptly fired on August 7th due to unprofessional conduct following an altercation with an employee. As if the story wasn€™t already a big deal, being that the WWE released one of their most reliable hands and biggest stars, especially in Mexican markets, news came out that the altercation that led to Del Rio€™s departure involved racism. Apparently the WWE€™s Social Media Manager at the time made racist remarks about Del Rio, which eventually got back to Alberto, which led to Del Rio slapping said Social Media Manager during an altercation. To make matters worse, it was also reported that the WWE told Alberto they were only going to fine him, but then fired him two days later. As if things could get any worse, they didn€™t fire the man who had made the racist comments, Cody Barbierri, or reprimand him in any tangible way, at least to the public€™s knowledge. The situation was a very bad one. Apparently Triple H told Alberto that he would be brought back soon after his firing, much like Daniel Bryan was after being fired for choking Justin Roberts with his tie on Raw. Del Rio didn€™t want any part of that though, and wanted to be done with the WWE. You know that the WWE was in a sticky situation and could have been in very hot water because they waived their standard non-compete clause and let Alberto immediately begin working elsewhere. This firing was surprising not just because of how abrupt it was, not just because of the racially tinged circumstances, but also because of the fact that the WWE was in a precarious position following it. It had exposed some form of racism in the inner workings of the WWE, which led to discussions about race relations in the WWE by fans, and also left them vulnerable to lawsuit. Fortunately for them Alberto Del Rio simply wanted to move on and be done with the WWE. The fact that he got to be only added to the surprise of this firing.
