Two weeks before the Survivor Series 1994, Randy Savage left the World Wrestling Federation because Vince McMahon wanted to go with a New Generation of stars and wouldn€™t let the Macho Man wrestle anymore. Bret Hart was the poster boy for the future. He was technical, had colourful outfits and was believable in his role. He€™d been feuding with his brother Owen for most of the year with excellent matches taking place between the two in the US, the UK, Germany and everywhere in-between.

The 45-year-old Bob Backlund had turned heel and was doing a' crazy middle aged man' gimmick, which was fine for a mid card act, only at Survivor Series, he was challenging Bret for the WWF Title. Most assumed Bret would retain and the move onto a different program. Cue thousands of bemused and outraged fans in Texas that night when Owen Hart convinced mother Helen to throw in the towel and Backlund was made the very unlikely champion.

Randy Savage had left us, but we were stuck with Bob Backlund at 45 years old as WWF Champion. What a world to live in. Luckily, he only held the belt for 3 days before dropping it to Diesel. Phew.
