It's hard to imagine WWE these days without a dastardly authority figure warring with the good guys and pulling favours for the bad - but this is, in fact, a relatively new addition to the show.

Until Vince McMahon decided that fans needed a boardroom suit to whom they could direct their grievances, he was sitting behind the commentary desk next to JR and, for the most part, calling it down the middle.

And while Vince (being, you know, Vince) arguably plays the role better than anyone else, it was his long-time ratings adversary Eric Bischoff who did it first when he signed up as an excitable New World Order groupie in 1996 - before the WWE chairman was officially outed as the man pulling the Monday Night Raw strings.
