When he first became a manager, Ernie Roth tried out a few identities: Mr. Clean, J. Wellington Radcliffe, and Abdullah Farouk, but his career didn't really take off until he proclaimed himself the Grand Wizard of Professional Wrestling. The Wizard's first taste of championship gold came with the team of Mr. Fuji and Professor Toru Tanaka, who won the titles twice under his aegis.

He also guided Don Muraco, Ken Patera and Pat Patterson to the Intercontinental championship, although his greatest triumphs were his two world championship clients, both of whom dethroned the biggest babyface heroes of the day. Stan Stasiak ended the reign of Pedro Morales, while Billy Graham conquered the immortal Bruno Sammartino.
