2. Ronda Rousey Becoming The First Ever Female UFC Champion
With four weight classes and three reigning champions, the UFC's women's divisions are stronger than ever in terms of both prospects and established talents.
The recent fight between UFC Strawweight Champion Zhang Weili and Joanna Jedrzejczyk was rightly commended as one of the greatest fights in the history of the sport and featured in a prominent position on one of the biggest events of the year so far.
With all that said, it's hard to imagine that less than 8 years ago the UFC's public stance was that women would never fight in the organisation.
UFC president Dana White even said as much in an infamous TMZ interview in 2011.
But despite White's statements, women's MMA was going through a transition period, with Olympic medalist Ronda Rousey at the forefront, winning the Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Championship in March of 2012.
Rousey's unprecedented popularity was instrumental in the UFC's decision to absorb the Strikeforce women's 135lb division when Zuffa purchased the company later that year.
Then, having been crowned the inaugural UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion, Rousey made the first defence of her crown against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157 in the first female fight in the organisation's history.
Though it may not seem like a big deal these days, seeing female fighters enter the cage for the first time was mindblowing for fans who had long heard White steadfastly deny that the promotion would ever host women's bouts.
