10 Most Surreal Wrestling Moments In Recent History
4. Firefly Funhouse Match
A good wrestler does everything they can do highlight their strengths and hide their weaknesses. With this match, Bray Wyatt did both beautifully.
A gifted storyteller but relatively limited in-ring worker, Bray Wyatt overcame this flaw in his character by creating a match with no actual wrestling whatsoever. It should never have worked, but Wyatt and Cena pulled it off and created one of the must-see moments on TV this year, wrestling or otherwise.
Wyatt's psychological deconstruction of John Cena was a brilliant subversion of their disappointing WrestleMania XXX match. There, Super Cena once again vanquished the monster. Here, Wyatt successfully made John Cena the bad guy and himself the innocent victim seeking justice. Cena was left helpless as Wyatt exposed the ugly truth behind the Super-Cena myth, with The Fiend exacting revenge for all the talent John had left buried in his wake during his 10-plus years at the top.
Subversive, ingenious and flawless in its execution, The Firefly Funhouse Match was wrestling at its arthouse peak.
