The 2001 demise of Ted Turner's World Championship Wrestling has been lamented by those who believe it's genuine competition that is needed to stir Vince McMahon from his complacent slumber.
And given that his product has gradually become pointedly more "safe" over the last fifteen years, you can understand where they are coming from, although there is, perhaps, something to be said about (nearly) all of American wrestling's best talent being under one roof.
WWE didn't just become the only show in town after WCW's collapse. By pocketing most of the roster, it also ensured that there was little chance of a resurgent promotion filling the void, and therefore cemented its position at the top of the industry, where it has remained, unchallenged, ever since.
