10 Most Underrated WWE Promos From The Last Decade
7. Joey Styles' Shoot
Although Joey Styles' promo-turned-shoot received plenty of recognition back in 2006, the controversial segment has been swept under the rug as time has passed by. For those that are unfamiliar with this promo, it has be referred to as one of the few 'shoots' that hold a candle to CM Punk's Pipe Bomb. It's just a shame the promo was a work planned immaculately as a transition into the ECW revival... Like Punk, Joey Styles was handed a microphone and told to get everything he had to say out in the open on national TV as part of the planned shoot. Although Styles was reportedly instructed to speak from the heart, Vince McMahon surely wasn't too happy with the truths that Styles revealed. Styles decided to use the airtime to detail his experiences commentating WWE programming, an opportunity that was presented to him when Jim Ross had to take time off for surgery. Having been the voice of ECW, Styles' approach to commentating - frequently doing unforgivable things such as, y'know, calling the moves - would regularly generate criticism from Vince McMahon through his headset. Vince wanted Styles to adhere to a marketing-based commentary approach. 'Professional wrestler' was to become 'sports entertainer' and 'wrestler' was to become 'Superstar', among other pointless Vince-isms. Despite publicly voicing his annoyance with the company and approaching WWE producers and officials, Styles was made to fall in line and subsequently called episodes of Raw and PPV events until Backlash, when he was taken off the air in preparation for the work. Jerry Lawler was placed in the heel role to bully Styles as a build-up to ECW One Night Stand, where Taz and Lawler were scheduled to face off. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1MJBO6k3a0
Overly-opinionated Australian WWE smark who is definitely not #booty. Slowly angering the IWC one article at a time. We will probably strongly dislike each other - let's be friends! @MattKMarsden
