At the start of 2006, Smackdown had a huge problem on its hands. Its major star, World Heavyweight Champion Batista, had a torn triceps muscle and was forced to relinquish the championship he had held for nearly a year.

Over on Raw, Kurt Angle was having a hard time getting booed despite being a heel. He did everything from taking on Davari as his manager to basically saying he had a problem with "the black people" and still he was cheered by the masses.

So, WWE had two problems on their hands, and killed two birds with one stone on the second Smackdown of 2006.

The company held a Battle Royal to determine the new World Heavyweight Champion, with Angle coming out as a surprise entrant (something to do with a contract loophole), and finally elininating Mark Henry (who WWE held responsible for Batista's injury) to win the World Heavyweight Championship.

The next week, Angle dropped Davari and stepped into Batista's spot as the top babyface champion on Smackdown.
