Yes, this match failed to live up to what it probably should have been. Two elite competitors who’d done the business in Japan - this had dream match potential written all over it, and it certainly never threatened to reach anything like that kind of standard.

Watch it again, though, without the burden of hype and expectation, and it’s far from the flop a lot of fans would have you believe it was. It’s a well worked clash between two incredibly gifted pros, with snug strikes, neat reversals, and the unpredictability factor that bolsters any title match.

Indeed it’s hard to put a finger on exactly why the match doesn’t quite work like it should. The crowd isn’t too responsive, for a start, which is true for a lot of the matches on this overstuffed card, and there wasn’t too much of a story behind it.

Nevertheless, this match is by no means bad, and if it’s no classic, it’s certainly beyond solid. When expectations are set this high, it’s tough not to disappoint.
