8. Randy Savage Vs George Steele - WrestleMania II

By no one’s estimation is this an example of great in-ring work. Indeed Savage, then a star on the rise, rankled at being booked against George Steele, who was a solid performer in his day but was getting long in the tooth by this point.

What it lacks in finesse, though, it makes up for in charm. The two aren’t given a great deal of time to work with, but build a simple and silly story around Steele’s lust for Savage’s valet Miss Elizabeth. It’s a testament to George Steele’s likeability that he can essentially pursue a frightened woman around a ring and still look like the match’s babyface.

Savage plays the sneaky heel as well as anyone and spends much of the match fleeing from, then launching surprise attacks on the bigger, hairier man. His athleticism would be given a better showcase in future years, but he does get in an impressive axe handle to the outside.

The Macho Man ultimately steals the win with a rope-assisted pin with bigger and better things on the horizon. While Savage would have far better WrestleMania matches than this one, the fun factor of this match shouldn’t be underestimated.
