10 Most Underwhelming WWE Superstar Returns

6. Matt Hardy

The internet was losing their collective hive-mind over the potential return of Matt Hardy. He'd built himself up quite well during his hiatus on the indies and during a brief stint with Ring of Honor.

When he showed up on WWE's doorstep again, he needed to capitalize on all the buzz surrounding him and queue up a promo for the ages. But any WWE historian will be quick to note a much different outcome.

The whole thing seemed a bit "off" from the get-go. First, it's weird that Vince McMahon gave him such a lengthy and convoluted introduction. That long-winded speech about Matt Hardy being "a good business decision" really dissipated a lot of the wow factor that had been earned by his out-of-nowhere, kayfabe-breaking attacks on Edge a few weeks earlier.

Once he was improperly introduced, he hopped out of Vince's limo and began his long, tedious trek to the ring from the backstage area. The promo that followed - with a seemingly impossible amount of hype foreshadowing it - was a rambling, whiny, and worst of all bland mess.

Matt's never really been stellar on the mic, but he really seemed to be flailing here. And he capped it off with one of the most apathetic lines in WWE history: "The only thing that would make me happier than permanently injuring you, Edge...is if you were killed in a car accident before I had the chance."

Aaaaaaand that's how you lose your momentum.
