8. Baron Corbin

It seems like a lifetime ago that the smart money was on Baron Corbin to become a major player in WWE. He had a fairly decent run in NXT, but Vince McMahon felt as if he had taken a real shine to The Lone Wolf when he reached the main roster. Corbin's size, physicality, and playground bully demeanor felt like a perfect fit for the demented billionaire's preferences.

This was further cemented when Corbin won a stacked Money in the Bank in 2017, beating the likes of AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, and Sami Zayn to put himself in the frame to be the next WWE Champion. Heading to SummerSlam to face John Cena, Baron was on a roll, but his crash to earth was one for the ages.

After John Cena had beaten WWE Champion Jinder Mahal in a non-title match, hitting two AAs in the process, the Modern-Day Maharaja was lying helpless when Corbin hit the ring to cash in his briefcase. Baron took out Cena on the ring apron with a right hand as the bell rang, only for Jinder to beat Corbin with a roll-up in six seconds.

Baron Corbin then lost to John Cena at SummerSlam, because of course he did. Life moves pretty fast in WWE.
