10 Most Unlikely Contenders For The WWE World Title
4. Jerry Lawler
Don't get me wrong: Jerry Lawler is an absolute legend in the wrestling world. He was the King of Memphis for decades and sold out arenas by feuding with Andy Kauffman, Terry Funk, Austin Idol, and Kerry Von Erich.
By 2011 however, Lawler certainly wasn't the wrestler or the draw that he was in the 1980s. Yet that's when he received his first (and only) pay-per-view title shot, against The Miz.
The Miz was floundering as world champion and was heading into WrestleMania XXVII with zero momentum. Naturally, he was programmed into a feud with commentator Lawler, because why not?
Lawler won a battle royal on Raw to earn a shot at Miz's WWE title at Elimination Chamber but was unsuccessful in his bid to headline WrestleMania against John Cena.
With hindsight being 20/20, John Cena vs. Jerry Lawler in the main event of WrestleMania probably would have been preferable to that awful display we got instead.
At least Lawler can throw a good-looking punch.
